Be more than 16 years of age.

Tuition fee £1,000/year (4 x 3 monthly payments of £250 payable in advance)

 English language requirements

Have an IELTS score of 5 or TOEFL score of 500, or a UNITEC Certificate in English (Intermediate 3), or a holder of transcript of records and certification of foundation course from "Global Impact".

  Program Summary

This is a program for speakers of languages other than English, whose English is already at a post-intermediate to advanced level.

The program aims to develop students' language proficiency to an advanced level. It includes a range of core and optional courses from which students can choose to make up a program that matches their needs and goals.

To achieve the Diploma in English, students must successfully complete two of the following core courses (one in the first semester and one in the second semester).

Courses include:

English (Upper Intermediate)

English (Advanced)

English for Academic Studies

English for Business and Computing Studies

English for Professional Employment (for permanent residents only).

Partial diploma study may be recognised with the award of a certificate. For this diploma, these include the Certificate in English (Upper Intermediate, Advanced), Certificate in English for Academic Studies, Certificate in English for Business and Computing and Certificate in English for Professional Employment.

School of Languages - Postgraduate Taught Course

Course Start Date: September, January, April and July.

This is an innovative program of diploma and master level studies. It is aimed at professionals in ELT (English Language Teaching) and ESL/EFL (English as a Second or Foreign Language) and is offered by distance learning. This mode of study provides participants with the opportunity to continue in employment while developing their knowledge, professional skills and increasing their qualifications.

This program is relevant to ELT professionals working in national or international contexts, in private sector or state (national) education systems. It is designed for those directly involved in ELT and those for whom ELT issues and skills form a significant part of their working context.

The program emphasis's the application of theory to practice. Practice and theory are combined through the development of classroom skills and the acquisition of in-depth understanding of the research and principles currently informing ELT. In addition, a main feature of the program is comprehensive coverage of research methods which means that participants will be fully equipped to undertake their own research in the dissertation phase.

Course Content
The course has two stages:

Diploma's: MA. Both stages contain modules which can be chosen by individuals to reflect their work situation and interests. Students can enter at the diploma stage and can leave after the diploma or masters stage.

Diploma
This stage has a strong classroom focus. It comprises two core modules:

Principles, Methodology and Language 1

Principles, Methodology and Language 2

A choice of one from the following:

Young Learners

Teaching Business English.

For the teaching practice component, students must have access to an EFL/ESL (English as a Foreign Language/English as a Second Language) teaching situation and/or be able to teach sufficient EFL/ESL classes. They will need audio and video recording equipment.

MA
This stage aims to develop students' knowledge of current issues in theory, methods, materials and management. A further purpose is the investigation of a chosen specialisation through research. It comprises three core modules:

research methods

dissertation (equivalent to 2 modules).

A choice of two from the following half modules:

Young Learners (2)

English for Academic Purposes

Management in EFL

First and Second Language Acquisition

Teacher Education

Testing and Evaluation

Intercultural Issues in EFL.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment
Each student is assigned a personal tutor with whom they maintain contact as they work through the modules. Learning materials are sent by post or email or a combination of both. No previous experience of distance study is required since each module contains detailed instructions and advice. Assessment is as follows.

Diploma in ELT, for each core and optional module:

Portfolio of short tasks

Two teaching assignments video recorded with specified documentation.

MA in ELT:

3,000 word assignment on each option module

12,000 - 15,000 word research-based dissertation.

Entry Requirements
English Language level: IELTS 6.5 (8 for reading)/TOEFL 575 (paper-based) 232 (computer-based) or equivalent.

Cambridge (UCLES) CAE Grade A or CPE Grade C or above.

Diploma in ELT, one of the following:

An initial qualification in ELT plus teaching experience

Advanced Language course LEC Certificate

An initial, certificated qualification in ELT (TOEFL/TESOL) which contained an observed teaching component

Significant ELT teaching experience or related ELT experience. (A portfolio detailing this experience will be required.)
