Levels of English Beginners

Understands basic English grammar but can barely put English to use. Maybe able to read and say a few easy words and sentences. Needs to practice reading aloud and pronouncing words.

Teachers should teach and encourage students to speak in full sentences. We recommend teachers to stick to easy, familiar topics when teaching.

Pre-Intermediate

Can talk a little and understand people if they speak slowly, clearly and in short sentences. Needs to refine pronunciation and expand vocabulary to enhance expression of opinion and feelings.

Teachers should start teaching more complex grammar and encourage students to write essays to help them organize their thought.

Intermediate

Can communicate in familiar situations by using some variety of vocabulary but has problems with complex grammar and vocabulary.

Teachers should start providing lessons using a variety of topics such as articles from the news, university textbooks and teach students new idioms and phrases they could use when socializing in an English speaking environment.

Upper-Intermediate

Can understand and speak reasonably and effectively but may not always understand what people say.

Teachers need to focus more on enabling students to use their English in more professional areas such as business meetings, presentations, job interviews, SAT, TOEIC preparation and so on.

Advanced

Fluent and precise in speaking and understanding English. May have problems with unfamiliar vocabulary. In this level students are likely to be more interested in topic discussions, free talking or preparing for exams such as SAT, GMAT or knowledge in an area of their own interest.
