Basic Equipment used 
in the structure of the Internet. 

     What are the major pieces of equipment required for the Internet, and what do they do? The diagram below displays the main pieces of the Internet equipment from the User's PC to the online equipment. These represent the most significant parts of the Internet's architecture. 

User's Multi-Media PC - If you are missing this picture it might be because you have asked for thispage.html/ , the extra / at the end of the URL  is messing -up the graphics User PC - A Multi-Media Computer equipped to send and receive a variety of functions. 
  1. Sound Card with Microphone/Speakers For receiving and sending Voice, music etc.
  2. Video/Graphics display card for receiving 3D, video, transmission etc.
  3. Video camera - To enable a 'real time' moving picture onto the net for others to see and hear.
  4. Voice recognition - To allow commands to be given and letters to be written from 'voice' to the user pc by the operator
User's Communication equipment User's Communication Equipment )PC)- This is the communication equipment located at the User's home or work to connect the Users' PC to the internet
  1. Analog Modem (v.90=56K) Voice, Data, Fax, required to convert a signal through a normal telephone cable.
  2. Cable Modem (27 MB) required to make an access via a cable connection. 
  3. Electric Line (1 MB) To enable a connection to be made using a digital connection. 
  4. Satellite (400 Kb) For transmission via satellite.  
  5. LAN  Local Area Network Connection to other PC's via the internet.
  6. Routers To enable a computer signal to be routed to and from set locations
  7. Firewalls Used to prevent access into certain areas without due authorization

User services are services supplied to the PC User such as email, DNS, Usernet etc.

Security The information used on the internet is ready available for all. It is therefore important to have some form of security to prevent access from users who enter areas which are nothing to do with them. Commonly known as 'hacking'. Hacking is a punishable offence. By law.

the ISP's POP ISP POP- This is the beginning of the ISP's network. Connections from the user are accepted after  authentification  here.
User services which most users will need (dns, email, etc) User Services - these are the services that most users would use along with Internet Access.  
  1. Domain Name Server 
  2. Email Host 
  3. Usenet Newsgroups (NNTP)
  4. Special services such as quake, telnet, FTP
  5. User Web Hosting 
  6. (These servers require fast interfaces and large/fast storage).

  1. A much deeper area and world of large circuits, Routers, Switches, Backbone Providers/Exchange points etc.
online hosting platform Online Content These are the host sites that the user interacts with. Consisting of:-
  1. Web Server platforms 
  2. Real-player Servers  
  3. Hosting Farms
  4. These servers require fast interfaces and large/fast storage.
original sources for online data Origins of online content This is the original "real-world" sources for online information. 
  1. Existing electronic information is being connected from legacy systems.
  2. Traditional print resources are being scanned and converted into electronic format
  3. Many types of video and audio programming are being broadcast via the internet. Internet telephony is growing fast.
