should have successfully completed VCE (or its equivalent), or be a
mature age applicant with appropriate experience. Where to from here?While most graduates gain employment
in the Information Technology industry upon graduation, others decide to
continue their study at University to upgrade their qualification to a
Degree. The Centre for Information Science has generous cross-credit
agreements with many Universities, where graduates can gain up to 18
months of exemptions in relevant degree courses. Academic AwardThe Certificate in Information
Technology will be awarded upon successful completion of the first six
months (please notify us on enrolment if you plan to leave after this

Unit DetailsSoftware Dev\Networking (1st Year)These modules are common to both streams IT001 - PROGRAM DESIGN - (20 hours)This module provides students with the
skills to use a 3GL programming language to implement arithmetic
operators, decrement and increment operators, composite assignment
operators, selection, switch statements and iterations (loops). IT002 - INTRODUCTION TO PROGRAMMING - (45 hours)This module introduces you to the
concepts required to design computer programs. IT003 - INTRODUCTION TO APPLICATION FRAMEWORKS - (65 hours)This module provides students with the
skills required to develop graphical user interface (GUI) applications
using an application framework such as Visual Basic. NET IT007 - COMPUTER HARDWARE - (40 hours)This module provides students with
skills required to assemble a microcomputer from components. This
includes the ability to select and install appropriate components, and
to perform a range of hardware upgrades. This module will also enable
students to connect, control, and maintain common PC peripheral devices
such as monitors, printers, scanners, mice, etc. IT008 - MICROSOFT WORD & HTML - (45 hours)This module provides students with the
knowledge and skills required to produce, format, and electronically
file multiple page word processed documents. It will also introduce
students to the HTML language. IT009 - MICROSOFT EXCEL & DATA INTEGRATION - (45 hours)This module provides students with
knowledge and skills in the use of a spreadsheet package to produce
worksheets incorporating mathematical and financial functions and common
formulae according to user specifications. IT010 - DATABASE SYSTEMS - MICROSOFT ACCESS - (70 hours)This module enables students to create
and modify a database, design queries, and produce reports using both
single and multi-tabled systems, using a commercial database package. IT011 - BUSINESS SYSTEMS AND COMMUNICATION - (75 hours)IT011 - BUSINESS SYSTEMS AND
COMMUNICATION - (75 hours) IT012 - INTRODUCTION TO SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION - (45 hours)This module provides students with an
introduction into the purpose and different functions of a variety of
user documentation methods enabling them to create a written
specification describing particular user documentation requirements. IT013 - INTRODUCTION TO CLIENT SUPPORT - (40 hours)This module will introduce the student
to issues related to determining client computing needs, and the
technical procedures needed to meet specified requirements. IT014 - INTRODUCTION TO THE INTERNET AND MULTIMEDIA - (55 hours)This module will examine computer
hardware requirements for multimedia use, and identifies multimedia
components. The module also provides an overview of the Internet. It
assumes no previous experience of computer usage. At the end of this
unit the participant is expected to be able to use the internet to
locate suitable resources and create a professional PowerPoint slide
presentation. IT015 - INTRODUCTION TO NETWORKS & OPERATING SYSTEMS - (40 hours)This module enables students to
correctly use standard terminology to describe the main topologies,
carrier technologies, and hardware and software components used in local
area networks, including the characteristics of such devices and
software. IT016 - WINDOWS 2000 NETWORK ESSENTIALS - (40 hours)This module introduces students to: IT017 - WINDOWS 2000 PROFESSIONAL & SERVER - (75 hours)Using the Microsoft official
curriculum students will receive training in setting up Windows 2000
professional & server. Further independent study will enable the student
to sit the first two exams in MCSE qualification. IT018 - TUTORIAL - (20 hours)Students are provided with the
opportunity to discuss various issues related to their course of study
with their tutor. Software stream onlyIT004 - PROGRAMMING TECHNIQUES - (80 hours)This module provides students with the
skills to design and code algorithms in a 3GL programming language.
Problems will involve user defined data types, procedures and functions,
single and multi dimensional arrays, basic data validation, and
sequential text and binary files of simple types, record structures. Networking stream onlyIT005 - FINANCIAL PROGRAMMING - (40 hours)This module introduces students in the
use of a spreadsheet to set up a customised financial package. This will
involve basic macros using Visual Basic and inbuilt functions. This
module enables students to improve their Excel skills in a business
environment. Topics include:
IT006 - MULTIMEDIA PROGRAMMING - (40 hours)This module introduces students to
JavaScript that will enable them to construct web pages to be viewed in
Internet explorer, Netscape and other browsers. Software Dev\Networking (2nd Year)These modules are common to both streams IT019 - DB DESIGN AND INTEGRITY - (60 hours)This unit introduces students to the
concepts of database design and the security issues associated with
database systems. Software stream only (2nd Year)IT025 - INTRODUCTION TO JAVA - (40 hours)This module introduces students to
Java programming in a Windows environment, IT028 - ADVANCED JAVA PROGRAMMING - (100 hours)The focus of this course is on the
development of professional object-oriented applications involving any
or all components of the JDK. A large component of the course will
